Jonathan Kuminga Gives Timberwolves Another Versatile Scoring Option

The Minnesota Timberwolves added Jonathan Kuminga on a two-year deal, giving a Western Conference contender another athletic forward as it prepares for the 2026-27 NBA season.

A short-term deal with upside

NBA.com reported that Kuminga agreed to a two-year contract with a player option. The 23-year-old chose Minnesota after receiving interest from several teams and now joins a rotation built around Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert.

Kuminga spent most of his early career with Golden State before moving to Atlanta during the 2026 season. His experience across different systems gives Minnesota another player capable of adapting to changing lineups.

Scoring and athleticism

Kuminga has averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds across his NBA career. His best season came in 2023-24, when he averaged 16.1 points and started 46 of his 74 games.

His value for Minnesota is not limited to scoring. His athleticism can help the team attack the rim, defend multiple positions and create transition opportunities around Edwards.

Fit beside Anthony Edwards

The Timberwolves have built around Edwards as their primary offensive star. Adding Kuminga gives the team another player who can pressure defenses without requiring every possession to run through him.

The fit will still require work. Minnesota must establish clear roles and determine how Kuminga’s shooting, defense and decision-making fit alongside its established frontcourt and perimeter players.

Western Conference pressure

The West remains difficult, and Minnesota’s objective is to turn regular-season competitiveness into a deeper postseason run. The organization has already demonstrated a willingness to make significant roster decisions when it believes they can raise the team’s ceiling.

Kuminga’s arrival adds another variable. If he earns a consistent starting role and improves his efficiency, Minnesota could have greater lineup flexibility during the playoffs.
