The Lioness Season 3 finale delivered a devastating turn for Oleksandra Balakin, the Ukrainian intelligence operative played by Elizaveta Neretin. Although her death shocked viewers, the actress says she had anticipated the outcome and understood the reasoning behind it.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Neretin reflected on the decision by series creator Taylor Sheridan to end Oleksandra’s story. She explained that, despite wishing her character had received a different ending, she understood how the outcome fit the show’s portrayal of the intelligence world.
The finale, titled “The Unravelling”, also left major questions about Joe McNamara’s future and the direction of the Paramount+ spy thriller.
Elizaveta Neretin Expected to Wake Up Oleksandra’s Death in the Lioness Season 3 Finale
Neretin said Sheridan informed her about Oleksandra’s fate before the episode aired. Rather than being completely surprised, she felt the character’s death made sense within the story.
Oleksandra had become involved in the operation to rescue Joe McNamara, played by Zoe Saldaña, after Joe was kidnapped. Her position as a Ukrainian double agent placed her in a dangerous situation where loyalty, political interests and personal survival collided.
Neretin acknowledged that she felt sad about the character’s fate. However, she viewed the decision as consistent with the series’ depiction of people operating within powerful intelligence organisations.
The actress also said she would have preferred a happier ending for Oleksandra. Still, she understood why Sheridan chose a different path.
Why Oleksandra’s Story Was Always Dangerous
Oleksandra’s work as a double agent made her vulnerable to shifting alliances and suspicion. Neretin suggested that someone operating in such a role would struggle to survive for long without making painful sacrifices.
In her view, Oleksandra cared deeply about her country and was unlikely to abandon those commitments simply to protect herself. That dedication helped explain the character’s choices, even when they placed her life at risk.
The ending also reinforces one of Lioness’s central themes: intelligence operations can force people into situations where personal loyalty and professional objectives conflict.
Rather than treating Oleksandra’s death as an isolated shock, Neretin saw it as part of the larger story the series was telling about power, secrecy and survival.
Neretin Trusted Taylor Sheridan’s Creative Decisions
Neretin said she did not ask Sheridan to reconsider Oleksandra’s ending. She described him as the person leading the production and trusted his judgement about the direction of the story.
Her comments also offered a glimpse into Sheridan’s writing process. According to the actress, the cast did not always receive every episode in advance. As a result, new scripts and story developments could come as surprises to the actors, much as major twists surprised viewers.
Neretin said the cast would discuss the latest developments on set after episodes became available. That process made the experience particularly memorable because this was her first major role.
She also recalled suggesting “Alessa” as a shortened Ukrainian form of Oleksandra’s name. Sheridan accepted the suggestion, giving the actress a small opportunity to contribute to her character.
Nicole Kidman Discusses Kaitlyn’s Reaction to Oleksandra’s Death
Nicole Kidman, who portrays CIA supervisor Kaitlyn Meade, also discussed the moral questions surrounding the finale.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kidman described Kaitlyn as a character who has a conscience but must weigh moral concerns against the consequences of her decisions.
According to Kidman, Kaitlyn cannot remain trapped in regret if she wants to continue doing her job. The character’s professional responsibilities require her to assess what has happened and move forward.
That approach reflects the difficult environment in which Lioness operates. Its characters routinely face decisions that carry personal and political consequences, often without the luxury of resolving every moral conflict.
Oleksandra’s death therefore creates more than an emotional moment. It also raises questions about accountability and the cost of following orders within intelligence organisations.
Will Lioness Return for Season 4?
As of October 2026, Lioness Season 4 has not been officially confirmed.
Kidman has nevertheless expressed interest in the possibilities for the series if it returns. She believes the show’s established characters and complicated relationships leave room for several different storylines.
A fourth season could explore the consequences of Joe’s kidnapping, the impact of the finale on the remaining team and the personal challenges facing characters such as Kaitlyn. However, those possibilities remain speculative until a renewal and further story details are announced.
For now, viewers are left with the consequences of the third season’s events. Oleksandra’s death marks a major turning point, while Joe’s professional and personal life faces fresh uncertainty.
The finale leaves the series with plenty of unresolved tension, but its next chapter will depend on whether Paramount+ moves forward with another season.
