The Philadelphia 76ers enter the 2026-27 NBA season with one of the league’s most ambitious rosters after adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to a core led by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Philadelphia changed its competitive outlook

James signed with Philadelphia in July after 23 seasons in the NBA. The four-time champion joins a team that also acquired five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown from Boston during the offseason.

The combination creates unusual expectations. Philadelphia is no longer simply trying to improve its roster; it is entering the season with enough star power to make a championship run a realistic organizational objective.

Brown adds two-way strength

Brown arrives after a career-best 2025-26 season in which he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists, according to the 76ers. His ability to defend multiple positions and create offense gives Philadelphia another option when opponents focus on James or Embiid.

The fit will still require adjustment. Four major offensive players need touches, and the coaching staff must determine how to balance ball movement, spacing and defensive responsibilities.

James brings experience

James remains one of the league’s most accomplished players. Philadelphia is betting that his experience can help organize a roster that now has multiple elite scoring options and championship-level expectations.

His presence also changes the psychological pressure around the team. Every loss will receive greater attention, and the coaching staff will have to manage workload carefully across an 82-game schedule.

Embiid and Maxey remain important

The new additions do not reduce the importance of Embiid and Maxey. Embiid remains the interior centerpiece, while Maxey provides speed and perimeter creation. The challenge is creating a system in which all four stars improve the team rather than simply increasing individual statistics.

Philadelphia also added depth around the stars during free agency, giving the roster more options if injuries or matchup problems appear.
