GTA 6 Extended Look Tops Netflix With 31.1 Million Views
An extended look at Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI became Netflix’s most-watched title in the latest weekly rankings, showing how video-game entertainment can compete directly with traditional movies and television.
A 27-Minute Preview Became a Streaming Hit
The 27-minute special, titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, generated 31.1 million Netflix views between its August 27 debut and the end of the platform’s August 24–30 reporting period. Netflix classified the program within its English-language film rankings.
The preview ranked No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked by Netflix, giving the game an unusually broad entertainment footprint before its planned release.
Netflix Tried Something Different
The performance is notable because the content was not a conventional film or television series. Instead, Netflix hosted an extended presentation of one of the most anticipated video games in the industry.
The move illustrates the growing overlap between gaming, streaming and entertainment. Major game releases increasingly receive the kind of promotional attention once reserved for blockbuster films, while streaming services are experimenting with content that can attract gaming audiences.
Gaming Becomes Broader Entertainment
Grand Theft Auto VI has been one of the most closely watched entertainment projects in development. The franchise already has a massive global audience, and the extended look provided viewers with a longer presentation than a traditional short trailer.
Its Netflix performance demonstrates the value of recognizable entertainment brands. Viewers did not need to be subscribed specifically for gaming content to encounter the presentation; it appeared within the same service that hosts movies, series and documentaries.
YouTube Expanded the Audience
Netflix’s exclusive window ended after several hours, after which Rockstar Games released the extended look through its official YouTube channel. That distribution strategy allowed the company to benefit from both a premium streaming launch and the enormous reach of a free video platform.
The dual-platform approach also highlights how entertainment companies can use different services for different stages of a marketing campaign.
What the Numbers Mean
Netflix defines a view using watch time divided by a title’s runtime. That means the 31.1 million figure represents Netflix’s standardized viewing metric rather than a simple count of unique people who watched the program.
Even with that qualification, the ranking is significant. The GTA presentation outperformed other titles on Netflix during the same weekly period and reached the top position across a large number of tracked markets.
A New Model for Game Promotion
The result may encourage other major game publishers to think beyond conventional trailers and gaming-focused platforms. Long-form previews can function as entertainment events when a franchise has a sufficiently large audience.
For Netflix, the experiment demonstrates that its audience can be interested in content connected to gaming even when the platform is not directly selling the game itself.
