IAEA Says Syria Cooperated on Investigation Into Undeclared Nuclear Activity
The International Atomic Energy Agency says Syria has made significant progress in clarifying previously undeclared nuclear activities, including work at the Deir al-Zor site destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in 2007. The findings mark an important development in international efforts to understand Syria’s past nuclear program and come as the agency faces a very different situation in Iran, where access to key sites remains restricted.
IAEA confirms reactor construction at Deir al-Zor
The IAEA said its investigation has established that a nuclear reactor was under construction at Deir al-Zor before it was destroyed. The agency’s assessment follows renewed cooperation from Syria’s authorities after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
According to Reuters reporting on the IAEA’s latest findings, investigators were able to obtain information and access that helped clarify earlier questions about the site. The agency also identified evidence connected with fuel fabrication inside Syria, strengthening its conclusion about the purpose of the facility.
Syria provides access and documentation
The new Syrian authorities have submitted documentation and agreed to remedial steps requested by the IAEA. The cooperation allows international inspectors to compare historical records with physical evidence and information from locations linked to the former program.
The process illustrates why access is central to nuclear safeguards. Inspectors need to be able to visit sites, collect samples and examine records before they can determine whether nuclear material or facilities have been accurately declared. Without that access, conclusions can remain incomplete for years.
Uranium remains under international monitoring
The IAEA has also identified significant quantities of natural uranium associated with the former Syrian program. Reuters reported that approximately 73 metric tons of natural uranium metal were identified at related sites, including material in fuel-rod form. The material is now subject to IAEA monitoring.
The finding does not mean Syria currently has a functioning nuclear weapons program. Instead, it provides additional evidence about the scope of past nuclear activity and gives international inspectors a clearer basis for determining what happened at sites that had previously generated major proliferation concerns.
Iran presents a contrasting challenge
The IAEA’s progress in Syria contrasts sharply with its situation in Iran. Inspectors have not regained access to several important Iranian nuclear sites following attacks in 2025, leaving the agency without a complete picture of the country’s current nuclear inventory.
Before the attacks, the IAEA had reported that Iran possessed a large stockpile of uranium enriched to 60%. The agency’s inability to verify the current status of that material has become a major international security concern because enrichment to 60% is much closer to weapons-grade material than the levels normally associated with civilian nuclear power.
Why the findings matter
The Syria investigation demonstrates the value of sustained cooperation between governments and international inspectors. It also shows how unresolved questions about nuclear facilities can remain part of global security debates for decades.
