Kimi Antonelli has made Formula One history by becoming the youngest driver ever to win the world championship. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver secured the 2026 title at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, triggering celebrations in his hometown of Casalecchio di Reno, near Bologna, Italy. Antonelli finished third behind race winner Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. That result gave him enough points to secure the Drivers’ Championship, regardless of the remaining results of his closest competitors. At 20 years and 68 days, he broke the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title at 23 in 2010.

Kimi Antonelli: Youngest F1 Champion, A Historic Achievement

The championship marks a significant moment for Italian motorsport. Antonelli is the first Italian driver to win the Formula One Drivers’ Championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year wait for another Italian champion. His achievement is particularly notable because he secured the title in only his second Formula One season with Mercedes. His successful campaign has also established him as one of the sport’s youngest record-breaking talents.

Casalecchio Celebrates Its New Formula One Champion

The celebrations were especially emotional in Casalecchio di Reno, where more than 500 people gathered at the Teatro Laura Betti to watch the decisive race together. Mayor Matteo Ruggeri described Antonelli as one of the community’s own and recalled his family’s longstanding connection to the town. Residents also shared memories of seeing the young driver growing up and spending time with his grandfather. Nearby Bologna has also announced plans to honour the champion with its prestigious Nettuno d’Oro civic award. Mayor Matteo Lepore confirmed the decision following Antonelli’s historic victory. A larger hometown celebration is expected to be arranged around the driver’s racing commitments. Meanwhile, his championship has given Italian motorsport a major moment of celebration and introduced a new generation to a historic Formula One achievement.
